In operation since 1996, Project American Life (P.A.L.) is a four day, three night outdoor civics and character education field trip for middle school students held at YMCA Hargis Retreat in Chelsea, Alabama. Students from all over Alabama attend P.A.L. annually. Being located in Shelby County, we are especially proud of the recognition and financial support that we receive from both the Shelby County Board of Education and the Shelby County Commission which allows us to provide scholarships to hundreds of students annually.
The P.A.L. curriculum has a social studies emphasis, but is an interdisciplinary program which meets state and national course of study standards in a wide range of subject areas. At P.A.L, all programming and instruction is based on small group learning, all of which is led by our highly competent and caring staff. All P.A.L. staff undergo reference and background checks as well as extensive training. Additionally, there is a nurse on staff to administer medication and deal with any medical situations that might arise. Teachers and/or chaperones have minimal duties which include supervision of student lodges at night. This design allows visiting teachers and chaperones to experience all of the excitement of P.A.L without any of the hassles.
For the clearest insight into the impact of the program, please visit the "What Others Are Saying" section of the website to see what teachers, parents, and students are saying about their P.A.L experience.
